From a Ceiling Leak to a Complete Save: Army Veteran Danny C’s Story in Topeka

When Army Veteran Danny C. from Topeka reached out to us, he had a problem that had become impossible to ignore. Every time it rained, water was leaking around his ceiling fan. Him and his wife could not sleep in their own bed anytime it rained. Like any homeowner, he wanted answers — and more importantly, he wanted it fixed the right way.

At first glance, you might think a leak around a ceiling fan means a roofing issue. But one thing we’ve learned over the years is that water has a way of traveling, and the source of the problem isn’t always where the damage shows up.

So we started investigating.

Once we looked beneath Danny’s siding, we couldn’t believe what we found.

Drywall.

Not inside the house where drywall belongs. On the OUTSIDE of the house.

Yes — drywall had been installed behind the siding, and where a vent should have been properly installed, someone had simply punched a hole through the drywall.

That explained a lot.

Drywall is never meant to be exposed to moisture in exterior applications. Over time, it absorbs water, weakens, deteriorates, and creates a perfect setup for leaks and long-term damage.

We removed the siding and corrected the issue the way it should have been done from the beginning. We replaced the drywall with proper plywood sheathing, installed a vapor barrier, and added the correct vents and eaves to ensure the home could properly breathe and shed water.

New plywood. We added vapor barrier and cut out the vent.
New plywood. We added vapor barrier and cut out the vent.

Problem solved…or so we thought.

Then the next major storm rolled through.

Danny called us upset and said it was leaking again.

Now here’s something we strongly believe in: when we do work, we stand behind it. We knew the repairs we completed were done correctly, and we knew something else had to be going on.

So in the middle of pouring rain, we headed over to Danny’s house.

We climbed into his attic and immediately found another problem.

There was no proper roof decking beneath the shingles.

You can clearly see the spaces between the 1x6 boards, 2nd pic is a huge hole in the boards and more gaps between the boards.

Instead of plywood or OSB sheathing, there were only old 1x6 boards with visible gaps between them. You could literally see daylight coming through.

Unfortunately, we had to give Danny the news nobody wants to hear: his roof wasn’t up to code.

That’s never an easy conversation, but Danny took it extremely well. We gave him the best deal we possibly could and replaced the roof the correct way.

And now?

No more leaks.

New roof, fixed bedroom ceiling.

Stories like Danny’s are frustrating because we simply don’t understand how someone can cut corners that severely knowing a family is going to live there. Homes are supposed to protect the people inside them. When work is done improperly, families end up paying for those shortcuts years later.

The good news is Danny now has a home repaired the way it should have been from the start.

And the best part?

Danny became one of our 5-star reviews.

That means more to us than anything. Because at the end of the day, we aren’t just fixing homes — we’re earning trust.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What areas of my home should I inspect each spring?

A: Focus on siding, windows, doors, gutters, fascia and soffit, sealing flashing and sealing exterior vents, and any other areas where water can enter the home.

Q: What small exterior issues should homeowners fix right away?

A: Loose siding, cracked caulking, small gaps, peeling paint, and clogged gutters should be addressed early before they lead to larger repairs.

Q: What are common signs of hidden damage?

A: Watch for water stains, soft or rotted wood, mold or mildew, gaps around windows or doors, and unexplained drafts.

Q: Can small maintenance issues really turn into expensive repairs?

A: Yes. Small issues that are ignored will gradually lead to water intrusion, structural damage, rot, and larger replacement projects over time.

Q: How often should I inspect the exterior of my home?

A: A full visual inspection at least twice a year—typically spring and fall—is a good habit and can help catch problems early. And if there is a particularly bad storm with high winds and hail.
