Making a Bold Exterior Color Look Intentional
Dark siding can create a dramatic modern exterior, but it also makes every transition easier to see. Window edges, rooflines, soffits, corners, and trim have to be coordinated carefully because a bold color leaves little room for unfinished details.
For Teresa's Topeka home, the selected product was LP SmartSide ExpertFinish siding in Abyss Black. The deep factory-finished color gave the home a completely different presence while placing extra importance on the surrounding openings and roofline.
Veterans installed the Abyss Black siding, coordinated the window and door openings, and completed the roofline and painted soffit details so the dark exterior would read as one finished design instead of a collection of separate surfaces.
The homeowner's completed photograph verifies the finished elevation, including the painted soffit and coordinated roofline. The result is bold, clean, and distinctly different from the home's earlier appearance.

Coordinating a Large Exterior From Every Elevation
The larger the exterior project, the more every measurement, opening, trim line, and color transition matters. Siding and windows cannot be planned independently when thirty-nine openings have to fit cleanly into a completely renewed exterior.
For the Roth home in Burlington, Veterans completed a comprehensive upgrade that paired 34 squares of LP SmartSide lap siding with 39 energy-efficient replacement windows. The selected palette combined Knight's Armor siding with Snow White trim for a crisp, high-contrast exterior.
The work required careful coordination across each elevation and every window opening. Special-order color-matched caulk was used so the sealing details would work with the new siding color instead of interrupting the finished appearance.
The completed home received a consistent exterior system from the roofline to the openings, with durable siding, updated windows, coordinated trim, and finish details designed to look intentional from every side.

TRI PLEX LEFT UNIT
Coordinating the Roof Siding and Window as One Exterior
Improving one portion of an attached building requires more than completing a list of separate repairs. Every roofline, wall panel, opening, and trim detail has to work with the shared structure around it.
For the left unit of this Northeast Kansas Tri-Plex, the project included roofing, LP SmartSide panel siding, and one replacement window. The existing wall bump-outs were retained, which meant the new siding and trim had to be carefully planned around those features instead of simply removing them.
Veterans completed the roofing work, installed 22.5 squares of LP SmartSide panel siding, coordinated the replacement window, and finished the wall transitions with Z-channel and trim. The work was planned to give the individual unit stronger protection while maintaining a consistent appearance across the attached building.
The homeowners association handled the painting. Veterans completed the roof, siding, window, Z-channel, and trim work shown in the project record, but we do not claim the finished paint as part of our scope.

TRI PLEX MIDDLE UNIT
Updating One Unit Without Losing the Whole Building
The middle unit of an attached building is visually connected on both sides. Even targeted work has to be planned carefully so the repaired area does not look disconnected from the neighboring homes.
This Tri-Plex unit needed updated roof protection, targeted LP SmartSide panel siding, and one replacement window. Because it sits between the other two units, the transitions at each side were especially important.
Veterans completed the roofing work, installed 5.5 squares of LP SmartSide panel siding, coordinated the replacement window, and completed the new Z-channel and trim. Each part of the project was aligned with the surrounding exterior so the middle unit could receive the work it needed without disrupting the shared appearance of the building.
The homeowners association completed the painting. Veterans' scope included the roofing, siding, window, Z-channel, and trim—not the final paint.

Correcting Localized Damage Across a Shared Exterior
Localized exterior damage can affect more than the panel where it first appears. Around doors, garages, windows, and wall projections, the surrounding trim and water-management details have to be considered together.
The right unit of this Northeast Kansas Tri-Plex had deteriorated siding in several areas, including details around the front door, garage, and upper walls. The north-wall alcoves also needed to be removed so the wall could be rebuilt with cleaner, better-protected transitions.
Veterans completed the unit's roofing work, removed the north-wall alcoves, replaced the affected LP SmartSide panels, installed one replacement window, and completed the necessary Z-channel, trim, and sealing. The repairs were coordinated with the attached units so the corrected areas would look intentional instead of patched.
The homeowners association handled the painting. Veterans completed the roofing, siding, window, wall-detail, trim, and sealing work documented for this unit.

Finding the Real Problem
Sometimes the biggest challenge isn't fixing the damage—it's finding what's causing it.
When Danny contacted us, water was leaking into his bedroom every time it rained. His roof had already been replaced just a few years earlier, so naturally everyone assumed the roof wasn't the issue.
During our inspection, we discovered something unexpected. Behind the existing siding, the home's exterior had been finished with drywall instead of proper exterior sheathing. We removed the siding, installed structural plywood, wrapped the home with Tyvek® weather barrier, and completed the exterior with new siding to provide the protection the home should have had from the beginning.
After the project was complete, another heavy rain came—and the bedroom leaked again. Danny called during the storm, and told us it was still leaking.
Instead of walking away, we went back to work during the storm. We continued investigating because solving the homeowner's problem mattered more than simply finishing the original scope of work. By carefully tracing the source of the water intrusion, we discovered the real culprit: the roof was installed without decking, and was allowing water to enter despite the roof having been replaced only a few years earlier.
The hardest part was telling Danny that the roof he paid for a few years earlier had not been installed correctly. When you do not install the correct decking, and install the shingles directly on 1x6 frame, it is not one solid surface. Water WILL leak down in between those boards.
Danny took the news like a champ, and we discounted as much as we could. Once the true source of the leak was corrected, the problem was finally resolved.

Rebuilding a Home From the Studs Up
Some homes need more than updated finishes. When the layout, insulation, and earlier additions no longer support the way a family lives, the right solution may begin behind every wall.
This first home included two additions, lath-and-plaster walls and ceilings, no insulation in the walls, and an inefficient interior layout. Surface-level changes would not have corrected the underlying problems, so the home was taken back to the studs.
Veterans completed the demolition, corrected the insulation, and rebuilt the interior into a practical three-bedroom, two-bath home. The kitchen and dining area were opened to create a more connected living space, while French doors improved the relationship between the interior and backyard.
The existing deck was repurposed and moved from the front of the home to the new patio-door area, allowing an earlier feature to serve the redesigned layout instead of being discarded.
The completed remodel did more than make the rooms look new. It corrected hidden deficiencies, improved the floor plan, and gave the entire home a more useful connection from the main living areas to the backyard.
