Before we get to roofing options, it is very important for you to know the components of a roof. Each component is a very important piece of the roof as a whole. If one part is missing, then it will not function properly. For example, the number of vents is calculated by the total squares of the roof. If you install too few vents, the roof will be open to failure because of the inability to vent out the hot, humid air. This will cause buckling of the decking and shingles and will void any warranty. If you install too many vents, it will be difficult to heat your home in the winter. In Kansas, we focus on asphalt shingles only, because of the durability during the harsh weather conditions we typically see here. There are 3 main types of shingles. 3 tab, Architectural and Luxury. 3 tab shingles are the oldest and have not changed much. They are typically used for large barns or outbuildings because they are less expensive. There is really no protection from hail damage. Architectural shingles have been designed specifically to withstand our winds and hail. Class 3 and above shingles will also save you money on your insurance premiums. Luxury shingles are, of course, the best of the three, but also not attainable for most of the homeowners. The luxury shingles can have different looks, and will add 10-20 years of warranty to your roof.
